Thinking of Starting a Blog
This weekend a friend asked me for some advice on starting her own blog, I started thinking about some key points which would be helpful for her. So if you’re interested in starting your own blog but not sure where to begin, here are my top 5 tips.
1. My 2nd Job is my Blog
Blogging can feel like a full-time job at times, so be prepared you’ll need to make time for your blog. Planning and scheduling is the key. Before I went on maternity leave I was working full-time, so I use to schedule my weekends for drafting posts, and a regular day in the week for posting. Now I’m on maternity leave I thought I would have more time for blogging, but the complete opposite is true, so it’s a good idea to schedule your blogging time and be flexible as life happens. Don’t worry if you’re not the super organised type, you’ll find what works for you as you blog progresses, and remember there’s nothing wrong with taking time out from your blog if need be – work, studies, kids, holidays,,, blogging shouldn’t feel like a chore it’s a fun and a great way to express your thoughts, feelings and passion so enjoy it.
2. What Do You Want to Blog About?
It doesn’t have to be the obvious, it can be whatever you want. Whatever you’re passionate about, your hobby or just about your life. The great thing about creating a blog is it’s your own personal space, you can write about whatever you feel passionate about. Whatever you want to discuss with your readers, who is going to be reading your blog? So make it your own.
3. Which Blogging Platform?
Next to consider is which blogging platform to host your blog. The most popular ones being WordPress and Blogger, but there’s a wide range to choose from depending on your blog and what you’re looking for – Ghost, Tumblr, Typepad,,. Now I’m not going tell you which one is right for you, the best step is using search engines – What are you looking for in your blog? Which platform will suit your requirements – e.g. WordPress vs Blogger. Now I don’t want to seem bias as I’m currently using WordPress, and am a big fan. For me they have a wide range of impressive themes to suit all types of blogs, and lots of support, a helpful community board and useful blogging workshops and guides.
4. The Details Are in the Name
Now comes the fun part, the name of your blog. Your blog name is very important, as once people start reading your blog you want a name which is memorable, catchy and also relates to what your blog is about. Jot down some ideas, phrases, keywords of what you would use to describe your blog. Then maybe change it up a bit by adding memorable phases. Test your blog name with your friends and family, and think “does it speak about my blog”, is it memorable and most importantly make sure you’re happy with your blog name.
5. Let’s Start Blogging
Now that you’ve got your blog name, my personal advice is start drafting up a couple of blog posts. I would probably recommend doing at least 6, this way you’ll have a few posts at hand. You don’t have to write the finished article straight away, Leave it for a few hours and come back to it. Having posts ready to publish gives you free time to start customising your blog appearance and helps for those blogging block days.
